Amtrak's Strategic Planning
Originally, we planned to evaluate Amtrak’s Strategic Planning process and the 2009 planning documents by comparing and contrasting the process and plans to “best practices” in strategic planning. We had completed an extensive review of current models and practices in Strategic Planning when we learned that Amtrak management was convening an executive leadership group “...to create the future service and organizational vision for the company.” We decided that, rather than continuing our evaluation of Amtrak’s past process and plans, it was best to share with management our observations of how Amtrak’s current plans and proposed new initiative compare with what we identified as the “best practices”4 in Strategic Planning.
