Amtrak OIG investigation leads to $260,000 civil settlement in alleged improper billing case

PHILADELPHIA – The United States reached a $260,000 civil settlement Friday with a contractor who was providing catenary services to Amtrak.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, HNTB, Inc. provided services as part of the New Jersey High Speed Rail Improvement Program under an Amtrak contract. Amtrak’s Office of Inspector General initiated an investigation after discovering discrepancies in HNTB’s billing during a review of select Amtrak contracts.

“Our Office is dedicated to helping Amtrak and our other federal partners maintain the integrity of their contracts,” said U. S. Attorney William M. McSwain. “The excellent work of the Amtrak Office of Inspector General laid the groundwork for a fair and speedy resolution of this matter and reinforces the duty of contractors to ensure compliance with the terms of their federal contracts.”
